The Owls have been wrestling short-handed all year due to injuries that have been accumulated since the beginning of the school year. They have also dealt with a handful of transfers, along with other growing pains a program can experience in year two. However, they have kept their schedule unchanged, to help the wrestlers who are in the lineup an ability to test and improve themselves as the season progresses.
The test for this past weekend was a set of three duals against both current and future conference opponents (William Woods is currently scheduled to leave the AMC for the Heartland Conference). Their opponents, Missouri Baptist University, St. Ambrose University (Iowa), and the current #1 ranked team in NAIA and host, Grand View.
The Owls entered the day 1-9 in duals and unfortunately for their team, they would not be able to improve upon this mark. Whereas Grand View entered the day undefeated at 14-0, Missouri Baptist 11-5, and St. Ambrose 6-5. William Woods would face an uphill battle all day long having to give up three matches due to forfeits and start the dual off down 18-0. While the Owls lost all three duals, ending their dual season 1-12, some of the William Woods wrestlers were able to earn some individual wins and potentially some important seeding criteria for the upcoming AMC Conference Tournament.
The Owls would win only five individual matches on the day out of 21 total matches contested. Whit Nichols picked up a win vs. his opponent from Grandview. Dominic Mullin picked up a win at 184 lbs. vs. Missouri Baptist, and both Easton Demilia and Elijah Brocksmith picked up wins against their opponents from St. Ambrose.
Up Next:
The William Woods Owls will now have two weeks to get ready for their NAIA National Tournament qualifier, the AMC Conference Tournament. It will take place on February 22nd, in Oklahoma City at Abe Lemons Arena. The Conference should have several automatic bids for the NAIA National tournament based on the last regular season ranking that will be released later this week. For example, at 133 lbs. if the AMC has 4 ranked wrestlers, then the top four places would qualify for the national tournament. The rankings are scheduled to be released on February 12th.
In addition, any individual conference champion will automatically qualify for the national tournament. Should any William Woods wrestler qualify, he would be the first in program history to do so. The NAIA National Tournament is scheduled for March 6-8 in Park City, Kansas at Park City Arena.
