While not all of the expected matchups happened at the intrasquad dual, there are still some relevant takeaways for Tiger fans. Ten freshmen wrestled, and almost all faced more experienced wrestlers. This was also the first time we saw Brock Mauller in a Mizzou singlet since coming off of his redshirt year. Here are six big takeaways that I saw from watching these matches.
Redshirts aplenty this season
Sometimes true freshmen come in immediately ready to start, but with what little we’ve seen so far, it seems like all of these freshmen could use a season to get ready. Teammate matches aren’t the best way to judge potential, but Jerrdon Fisher was the only true freshman to beat an older wrestler today. Hopefully they are able to get some time in open tournaments in the season to give fans a better look at how they’re developing.
Mizzou has incredible depth at a handful of weights
While Mizzou has always fielded a deep team, they showed that they are potentially three plus deep at certain weights. 141lbs has Allan Hart, but also talented younger wrestlers Korbin Shepherd, Trey Crawford, and redshirting Josh Edmond. Add to that ranked recruits Easton Hilton and Owen Uhls, and that shows a deep room with a lot of room to grow for those recruits.
