Consistency is the name of the game.  Westminster has been steadily improving each of the first two weekends of competition in January.  This 3rd weekend in a row is going to be a In all there were 19 teams (including Westminster) registered for this tournament.  There were numerous ranked NCAA Division II wrestlers along with ranked wrestlers from the NAIA level as well.

Out of the 35 total matches for the Blue Jays, they would win 20 of them throughout the day for a winning percentage of 57.1%.  Of those 20 wins, 12 of them were by pin or tech fall, which was good enough fifth overall at the tournament finishing behind only NCAA Division II Schools and the #1-ranked NAIA men’s program Grand View.

Despite this level of success at this event, only two of the Blue Jays were able to reach the podium, Sophomore Austen Wetzel at 184 lbs. and Junior Michael Roberts at 157 lbs.

Michael Roberts started off strong with a pin (he had 5 pins and 1 tech fall on the day) in the opening round, but would lose in the second round to a wrestler from Central Missouri Univ.  After that, he battled back through the consolation side of the bracket and won five straight matches to reach the 3rd/4th place match.  Roberts would end up losing his medal round matchup to a wrestler from NE Oklahoma A&M.

Austen Wetzel also started off the tournament on strong note with a first round pin versus his opponent from Newman (He finished the day with 3 pins).  He would make quick work of his next couple rounds of opponents and would face-off against a wrestler from Central Missouri Univ.  Wetzel would have multiple attempts to score but would come up short after giving up two 3rd period takedowns to fall 9-5.  Wetzel would rebound well and won his consolation semis and his medal round matchup to finish with 5 wins and only 1 loss on the day to earn 3rd place.  This is Austen’s 3rd podium finish of the season after winning the Dr. Smith Open last weekend and a runner-up finish at the Drury Open.  .
