Wrestlers from elementary-school age to high school were getting in one final tournament before the Freestyle State and Greco Tournaments kick off.
That was what a lot of girls and boys competitors used the Ultimate Freestyle Tournament for which took place last Saturday at Fort Osage High School.
There were 479 wrestlers at the event who were split into 113 different weight classes.

High school girls
99-105: Kearney’s Zolah Williams had little trouble winning her bracket as she won two matches by tech fall and two by pin as the cruised to a bracket win.
“I am just proud of myself,” Williams said. “There was a lot of good competition here today. I scored a lot of my points off double legs.”
109-116: Mya Woolridge of Kearney pinned all four of her opponents in less than 2 minutes as she dominated and won her bracket.
109-119: Odessa’s Addison Eddleman won in a variety of ways. She won a match with North Kansas City’s Elena Moore 11-4, won over Lone Jack’s Lillian Mccleary 10-0, won by forfeit over Blue Springs South’s Killian Evans and pinned Riley Hofeditz to earn first place.
114-116: Marshall’s Karlee Bellamy went 3-0 in her round-robin bracket and earned two 10-0 tech fall wins and got a pin in 44 seconds to cruise to the top of the podium.
116-120: Lawson’s Journey Clevenger pinned all three of her opponents in the first period to take her bracket.
119-124: Park Hill South’s Temperance Lowe cruised through her first three matches, getting one pin and two victories by tech fall. She had a tough final match against Nyzia Burney of Wichita, Kan., but prevailed 10-4 to earn a T-shirt, which was the prize for first place.
122-129: Fort Osage’s Alina Wackerman went 3-0 in the round-robin bracket, with contested wins of 10-0, 8-0 and a victory by forfeit as she earned first place.
128-131: Jauzlyean Gray of Independence had one win by tech fall and two pins, including an upset win over Fort Osage’s Kylie Dunn as she took first.
129-135: Two-time high school freestyle Missouri state champion Emily Bischoff of Odessa showed she’s a pretty good freestyle wrestler, too. She has one win by forfeit, two pins and a 10-0 tech fall victory as she coasted to a bracket victory.
135-140: Carthage’s Kylee James ran roughshod over her competition, getting three pins and a 10-0 win by tech fall to capture first place.
142-151: Lawson’s Josie Holman said she hasn’t wrestled a lot in freestyle, but she managed to win a pair of close matches by margins of 10-5 and 11-8. She also won her first match by pin as she took first place.
“I haven’t wrestled freestyle a whole lot, I have wrestled folkstyle mainly,” Holman said. “I have to adjust my body position and how I throw.”
153-162: Raymore-Peculiar’s Abby Keating had a pin and two wins by tech fall to earn a T-shirt following a bracket win.
165-168: Smithville’s Adalee Pickett took care of business in her small round-robin bracket as she won both of her bouts by pin to take first.
174-188: Oak Park’s Kendall Angelo went 2-0 in her bracket, picking up wins of 10-0 and 7-0 to take her division.
Cadet Boys
90-99: Paul Donnici of Kansas City comfortably won all three of his matches, getting two wins by tech fall and one by a 12-6 margin over Kansas’ Enrique Tellez Jr. as he earned first place.
99-106: Liberty’s Aden Hendricks coasted to a bracket title as he won two matches by pin and one by fall to take it.
106-111: Oak Grove’s Atreyu Whitten went 3-0 in his round-robin bracket, winning two matches by tech fall and defeating Gunner Hamilton of Kansas 17-10 to take first.
110-118: Lex Johnson of Oak Grove only surrendered four points in three matches and won them all by tech fall as he won his bracket.
117-126: Liberty’s Jaxon Hooley admitted his stamina wasn’t where he wanted it to be in this tournament. However, he had enough left in the tank to go 3-0 in his bracket with a win by pin, one by tech fall and a 14-6 win as he captured first place.
“I thought I could have done better, but I am proud of how I did,” Hooley said. “I got a little bit tired between matches so I could work on my stamina.”
119-122: Kirksville’s Jason Schutter had two pins and a 10-0 tech fall win as he ran through his competition to take first place.
121-128: Blue Springs’ Rylon Collier won his first two matches by tech fall before he edged Smithville’s Cooper Heitman 8-7 in his final match to take first place.
124-126: Mid-Buchnnan’s Colby Schreck had three close victories as he won his matches 10-6, 4-2 and 14-8 as he earned his way to the top of the podium.
“I feel like I wrestled good, but it was not great in my first two matches,” Schreck said. “I won so that’s what matters. I was able to get to my sweep singles.”
124-132: Republic’s Shelby Horton went 4-0 in his bracket with two pins and two tech falls. He trailed 3-0 in his last match against Willard’s Zach Kelly before getting a win by pin in 1:46.
“It was very difficult because he was a strong competitor,” Horton said of Kelly. “I had to wing it because he had me on my back. I threw him over and hoped for the best. It worked out in my favor.”
125-126: Willard’s Waytt Sweeden didn’t have much trouble taking his bracket as he had one win by tech fall and two by pin as he won his bracket.
127-132: Platte County’s Ryan Barmann won a tough 11-9 match to start his bracket, but then won his last two by a 11-0 tech fall and by forfeit to take first place.
136-148: Ozark’s Colton Wilson won his first two matches by tech fall before defeating Platte County’s Jaxson Shute 8-0 in his final match as he captured the bracket title.
138-144: Columbia Rock Bridge’s Kaydn Smith had two victories by tech fall and one by pin as he took first.
145-155: Staley’s Brextin Marrah admitted he was not in the right head space coming into the tournament. However, he said his father helped him snapped out of it. It showed in his three matches as he had two pins, and a tech fall en route to a bracket championship.
“I started off pretty rough this morning,” Marrah said. “I had a bad mindset. My dad helped me pull through and my coaches helped me a lot. I fixed my stuff, and it ended up working out.”
148-149: Nixa’s Peyton Chainey won his first match over Webb City’s Carson Rooks, won his second match by tech fall and defeated Sedalia’s Chrystopher Hawkins 15-10 in the final bout to work his way to a bracket championship.
149-151: Zachary Zeltwanger of St. Joseph pinned his first two opponents and got a forfeit in his last one as he captured first place.
“I had a couple of good comebacks,” Zeltwanger said. “I must thank my coaches. They were able to get me through it when I was down. I was good on the tie-ups. I am not that strong, but I was good technique wise.”
155-156: Grain Valley’s Brody Braa had a solid performance as he won two matches by tech fall and one by fall as he earned first place.
156-163: Platte County’s Justice Martin went 3-0 in his bracket. His first two matches were won by a decision, and he capped his day with a 12-0 tech fall as he worked his way to a first-place finish.
161-170: Southern Boone’s Owen Britton earned wins in his first two matches by tech fall and then has a close match with Elijah Gulley of Lawrence and was victorious 8-6 as he took first place.
189-213: Boonville’s Bryce Newham didn’t give up a single point as he won both of his match by margins of 10-0 and 11-0 on his way to first place.
Heavyweight: Ozark’s Isaiah Collins had two competitive matches, and he won them both by margins of 10-5 and 3-0 as he took his bracket.
Junior Boys
123-128: St. Michael The Archangel Catholic junior Parker Lutz didn’t give up a single point in any of his three matches as he won two matches by tech fall and one by injury forfeit as he won a T-shirt for taking first place.
“I need to clean up my offense a little bit, but I felt good,” Lutz said. “I need to work on my ties and the process of getting to my shots.”
133-137: Springfield Glendale’s Ethan Kelly said he was pleased with the way he wrestled. He looked good on Saturday as he won both of his matches by tech fall to capture first.
“I feel like I could have been a little more aggressive on my shots.” Kelly said. “I think I wrestled well and got to my positions and didn’t get turned easily. I got to my shots, too.”
136-139: Warrensburg’s Jaylin Civil had a great day as he won two bouts by tech fall, and he got a first-period pin on his way to winning his bracket.
137-141: Fort Osage’s Luke Steffens said there are some things he needs to work on before the Freestyle State Tournament this weekend. But he still had a great day, winning his first two matches by tech fall and getting a pin in just 49 seconds in his last match on his way to first place.
“I got some stuff to clean up before state,” Steffens said. “I need to work on reattacks.”
140-144: Lee’s Summit Luke Nally had a tough bracket that featured four other top-level wrestlers. Even while having tough competition, Nally got through the gauntlet. He won three matches by tech fall and edged Keith Slaughter of Kansas 10-8 as he navigated his way to first place.
“I faced good competition. They were all strong,” Nally said. “I just had to stay in a good position and work my stuff. I like to use my two on one and get to a leg or whatever pops up.”
141-146: Kirkville’s Justin Schutter had two wins by a 10-0 margin and had a pin in just 11 seconds as he took first place.
147-149: Jet Brown of Odessa cruised to a first-place finish as he won all his matches by tech fall and only gave up two points total.
148-150: Seneca’s Brant Laughlin was critical of his performance and came away with things to work on before the freestyle state tournament. However, he won two matches by tech fall and one by pin as he earned first place.
“That last match, I came out pretty weak,” Laughlin said. “I could be better. I have a lot to work on. I need to finish my shots and use my hips better.”
151-158: Carl Junction’s Nicholaus Foulk said he needs to improve on his stamina, but he had enough energy to get through three matches as he won them all by tech fall to earn first place.
“My gas tank is not there right now but my skill makes up for it,” Foulk said.
151-157: Park Hill South’s Landen Mcdowell excelled on his feet and was able to get to his offense. That resulted in him winning all three of his matches by tech fall as he won his bracket.
“I was just going out there and having fun and working my stuff,” McDowell said. “I was getting to my leg attacks mainly. I got to my doubles and sweep singles.”
153-162: Smithville’s Brennen Green got some big throws in his matches for four- and five-point moves, which worked out well for him. He had two wins by tech fall and one by pin as he took first place.
“I tried to get the match over with and went for a couple of fours,” Green said. “The second match went long, and I was tired after that. I am pretty good at getting to my hooks.”
156-160: Summit Christian Academy’s Seth Stricklin said he learned from his mistakes in the tournament, which included an attempted headlock. Even with that mistake, he pinned all three of his opponents to win his bracket.
“I feel like I wrestled pretty good,” Stricklin said. “I went for a stupid headlock in my first match. I need to think more.”
156-157: Defense was key for Webb City’s Mason Hance to win his matches. He won all three of them by tech fall and he only gave up two points total as he captured his bracket.
“I had good defense and didn’t let them get to my legs,” Hance said.
163-169: Lee’s Summit’s Austin Cornett had a good day at the tournament. He won a match by tech fall and he earned pins in his other two bouts as he earned first place.
165-174: Columbia Hickman’s Luke Hayden dominated his bracket as he had two wins by pin and one by forfeit as he took first.
165-169: Odessa’s Ethan Kimmel got two victories, one by tech fall and one by fall, and he cruised to a first-place finish.
“I wrestled all right,” Kimmel said. “I could have done better. I need to train harder. My conditioning isn’t where it needs to be.”
170-181: Fort Osage’s Isaac Ward had a close match with Smithville’s Tristan Waters and won that one 10-6. His other two victories came by tech fall and that was enough to win his bracket.
181-193; Seneca’s Jace Renfro took his first two matches by tech fall and had a semi-competitive match in his last bout, but won that one against Kansas’ Jaelyn Sides, 9-2, and that resulted in a first-place finish.
205-210: Belton’s Jameson Lyons had one win by tech fall and one by pin as he earned a T-shirt for taking first place.
213-233: Raytown’s Samuel Pilkinton went 3-0 in his division. He defeated St. Michael’s Brodie Purtle 9-5 and won his other two matches by tech fall and pin as he had a strong showing in his first freestyle tournament and took first place.
“When they tried to get to double unders and would pressure, I’d be able to get that move off,” Pilkinton said. “My timing is good. The same with my double legs. I have learned to get my hips in so they can’t just throw me over.”
Heavyweight: Cathage’s Jaxton Lopez won both his matches. He had a tech fall and a pin to win his bracket.
