Ever since the early stages of last season, Liberty has been considered one of the top high school wrestling teams in the country. Over the past 12 months, Intermat.com has included the Blue Jays in its nationally acclaimed Fab 50 team standings.
“It’s nice to be in those rankings, but we want to move up the ladder as high as we can,” explained Liberty head coach Dustin Brewer, whose team continues to stand No. 1 in the MissouriWrestling.com Class 4 team poll. “That’s one of our goals. We did it last year how we kept moving up, and we believe we have the team to do it again this year.
“We definitely feel like we still have something to prove. We believe we should be ranked higher with those elite programs in the country.”
Well, the Blue Jays might just be when the new polls come out. Liberty, which ranked just outside the top 10 in the nation by the end of last season and have fallen to No. 29 in the most recent rankings, recorded a program-defining victory this past weekend by claiming the team title at the prestigious Kansas City Stampede, one of the toughest tournaments in the Midwest.
