Last season, the St. Pius X (Kansas City) boys wrestling team made history.
It became the first Warriors wrestling team to win a state championship in the history of the program. The team was loaded as it had 13 state qualifiers and five state champions at the Class 1 level.
This season, the Warriors return the bulk of their core to try and repeat as champions at the Missouri State High School Wrestling Championships, but the road will be a little tougher this time around.
St. Pius graduated state qualifier Ty Ward and two-time state champion Marco Dalakishvili. Senior Rylan Kuhn, a two-time state champion, elected to spend his senior season in the USA Wrestling Elite Accelerator program in Colorado Springs.
Not only will the Warriors be without three of their best wrestlers from last season, but they were bumped up to the Class 3 level, so they will have to compete with some bigger schools for a state championship like Hillsboro, Hannibal and Whitfield.
