Schlereth transfers to Gateway Science Academy with a chance to make girls wrestling history

By: Ross Martin

For the second straight year, Gateway Science Academy will have one wrestler on the girls roster. This time, the Gators have reason to believe history will be made.

Ryan Schlereth, a junior, transfers to Gateway Science from Hancock after winning the inaugural 187-pound title in the first-ever Girls Missouri State Wrestling Championships a year ago. She went 19-2 as a sophomore and pinned Wright City’s Donavan Holmes in the championship bout.

Gateway Science coach Cory Reichert won’t shy away from the expectations.

“(Schlereth) will make history for the GSA wrestling program,” he said. “I feel with Ryan on the team, years down the road girls will see what she has done and our female wrestling numbers will grow for the school.”
