#14 Mizzou 30 Wyoming 6
#14 Mizzou 18 Utah Valley 15
Mizzou rebounded well after last week’s upset loss to SDSU by getting two ranked wins on the road. Overall the team performed much better and won 14 of 20 matches between the two duals. Unfortunately there were still some disappointing upsets on Mizzou’s end. Keegan O’Toole and Peyton Mocco didn’t make the trip, which is somewhat concerning at this point with big home duals coming up. Rocky Elam also only wrestled one match after a poor showing in a decision loss. While much improved, Mizzou still has some issues to fix going forward.
125lbs: #14 Noah Surtin
- WBD over Brendon Garcia (4-0)
- LBD to #17 Taylor LaMont (5-3)
Surtin avenged a loss from last season against Garcia in a low scoring but one sided decision. He’s still not using his leg attacks a ton, so when a guy doesn’t tie up with him it makes it harder for him to score it appears. He put on a full third period rideout to get the shutout at least, but I’m looking for him to get some turns more frequently. In the LaMont match I actually liked how he wrestled for most of the match, but a late first period takedown and some issues from bottom were too much. Surtin struggled in the handfight and getting to his ties, but did score off a big LaMont throw by rolling him through. In the third period tied 3-3 LaMont was able to get a reversal and keep Surtin down. With short time left Surtin was very close to a reversal, possibly to the cradle position Mizzou is good at even, but the ref called a quick stalemate. While this was a rankings upset on paper, I think LaMont is much better than #17 but hasn’t had a chance to wrestle many matches after an early season loss.
