Moberly ready to move past 2019 state trophy, add to collection

By: Ross Martin

When the Class 2 Missouri State Wrestling Championships concluded, the pieces fell in just the right way for Moberly and its seven state qualifiers. A single point separated the Spartans from fifth-place Logan-Rogersville.

With 91 team points, Moberly earned a state trophy — the first for the program since a second-place finish in Class A in 1979. The Spartans’ historic finish came without any state finalists and making the most of five state medalists.

Now, Moberly turns the page toward adding to the successes.

“We are hoping to have another successful season,” Moberly coach Charlie Gibbs said. “The excitement from last year’s team trophy is wearing off. The program is ready to bring another trophy back.”
