Mizzou Transfer: Maxx Mayfield

The Tigers got a key piece in the transfer portal with the addition of redshirt senior Maxx Mayfield. Out of high school he was a three-time state champ from Lincoln, Nebraska. He started his career at Northwestern where he started from 2023-2025 with a record of 57-42 while at 165lbs. The past two years he finished in the round of 16.

In 2023 he was the 18 seed at NCAA’s and finished 5th at Big 10’s. In 2024 he was the 31 seed at NCAA’s while wrestling through injuries. He didn’t place but upset two top 20 seeds to make the round of 16. This past year he was second at Midlands and 6th in the Big 10 with a record of 20-12. He went 2-2 at NCAA’s with losses to Nick Hamilton and Peyton Hall. He did have a highlight win over eventual All-American Chris Minto of Nebraska this season.

On tape Mayfield has a solid but not flashy style. He is good at getting to legs but sometimes gets stuck in scrambles or struggles to finish. He has a handful of attacks from neutral, often going with an underhook to set up. He has had some injury issues the past two seasons which is a concern, but has been a consistent wrestler in his time in the Big 10.

His addition fills a hole as returning All-American Cam Steed is likely moving up to 174lbs. It also allows incoming recruits Dom Bambinelli and Danny Heiser to redshirt and develop.

I’ve been told that part of the reason why Missouri has struggled to clinch bigger names from the transfer portal is that they haven’t had an opportunity to develop one as proof. Mayfield comes in with a solid skillset and plenty of experience. Now he gets to work in at one of Mizzou’s strongest weights with training partners in the aforementioned freshmen, Jarrett Jacques, Cam Steed, and Keegan O’Toole.
