#10 Mizzou 33 Binghamton 6
#10 Mizzou 12 North Carolina State 19
In the first day of National Duals, Mizzou had mixed results. They managed to win nine of ten matches against Binghamton, but few came easy. In the NC State dual, Mizzou won some individual battles but ultimately lost the war, being upset at two different weights. Noah Surtin had the biggest win of the day, upsetting #5 Jacob Camacho (NC State). Connor Brown made a surprising season debut up at 133lbs but wasn’t able to find success as of yet. Mizzou will face #21 Lehigh after they beat Central Michigan 25-6 and lost to #1 Iowa 28-7. For this review, I will recap both matches each guy had yesterday.
125lbs: #15 Noah Surtin
Win by Tech over Nick Curley (18-0 3:44)
Win by Dec. over #5 Jacob Camacho (7-4)
The biggest individual winner on the day, Noah Surtin finally got what I consider to be a signature win this season. His tech over Binghamton involved him getting on top and going to work, scoring multiple nearfalls in the first before finishing it up in the second.
In his match with Camacho, he was doing a great job early working his underhook and moving Camacho around. Surtin used this to score his takedown as he threw Camacho by and hit a huge return halfway through the first period. Surtin nearly rode him out the rest of the first, but Camacho got out with less than ten seconds left. Camacho managed to get an earlier escape after taking bottom in the second, but Surtin already had over two minutes of riding time. After a Camacho takedown and Surtin escape, it was all tied up 4-4 in the third period. In the closing seconds, Camacho was in deep on a shot and Surtin managed to hit a gator bacon to get two and the 7-4 win in an absolutely electric match. The fact that Surtin won didn’t shock me, but the fact that he did it by outwrestling Camacho on his feet impressed me. Now the rest of the country should know his name after two huge wins this season, and I’m excited to see what he’s able to show them.
133lbs: Connor Brown
Loss by Fall to Anthony Sobotker (2:56)
Loss by Dec. to Kai Orine (7-3)
