Missouri Valley starts season in Top 10

Marshall, Mo. (Oct. 31, 2019)- The Missouri Valley College men’s wrestling is set to open its 2019-20 seasons this weekend, and will do so as a top ten team.  The Vikings are ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Men’s Wrestling Coach Top 20 Poll, with nine individual ranked.

The Viking men’s wrestling team finished last season ranked No. 13 in the final coaches’ poll.  Missouri Valley is one of four teams from the Heart of America Athletic Conference ranked in the preseason coaches’ poll.  Grand View (Iowa) University is No. 1, Baker (Kan.) University is ranked No. 8 and Graceland (Iowa) University is No. 14.

Missouri Valley will meet No. 1 Grand View in a dual Jan. 29 on the road, No. 8 Baker at home, Jan. 23 and No. 14 Graceland on the road, Dec. 5.  The Vikings also host No. 5 Campbellsville (Ky.) University and No. 19 Williams Baptist (Ark.) University in duals, Dec. 17.

Nine individuals on the team are ranked in their respective weight classes.  Leading the team in the individual rankings is Senior Richard Pocock (Whittier, Calif.), ranked No. 3 at 149 pounds.  The other eight ranked individuals are:

No. 18 Sophomore Jacob Garrison-125 pounds.

No. 5 Senior Zachary Durbin (Arnold, Mo.)-133 pounds.

No. 16 Junior Dequarius Millett (Granite City, Ill.)-133 pounds.

No. 12 Senior Casper Sherow (Rialto, Calif.)-141 pounds.

No. 18 Senior Seth Johnson (Kenner, La.)-157 pounds.

No. 7 Sophomore Elias Vaoifi (Independence, Mo.)-165 pounds.

No. 14 Junior William Seibert (Farmington, Mo.)-174 pounds.

No. 17 Sophomore Dayton Brown (Warrensburg, Mo.)-197 pounds.

The Viking men’s wrestling team opens its season at the CMU Open in Fayette, Mo., Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.  The first home event of the season is the MVC Duals, Dec. 17.
