LIBERTY – Four years of hard work by the Liberty High School wrestling program paid off in the biggest of ways last season.
A memorable journey that began with the hiring of head coach Dustin Brewer in the spring of 2016, culminated in not only the program’s first-ever state team title, but in one of the greatest showings ever in the 90-year history of the Missouri State Wrestling Championships. But after ascending to the top of the mountain and now holding the title as reigning Class 4 State Champions, the Blue Jays want to believe this is only the beginning of what they will accomplish, not the end.
“I hope this is the start of an era,” Brewer said. “Our seniors last year really set the tone for our team. They made the sacrifices and worked their butts off and showed the younger guys what we want this program to be all about. Hopefully this is the year where we can follow up on that. They saw what those guys did last year, and now they know what it takes. It’s just a matter of them putting it into action.”
