Lady Bulldogs Complete Day 1 of District Tournament

Round 1:

The Mexico Lady Bulldogs were one of the few teams that not only received their seeds as anticipated but were given first-round byes for every single one of their wrestlers to start off the District Tournament.  This allowed the wrestlers extra time to hydrate and acclimate to the environment before having to actually compete.  For the two returning qualifiers, Abigail Bowen at 135 lbs. and Alexus Johns at 235 lbs. the St. Charles West H.S. gymnasium is familiar grounds as they both qualified in the same gymnasium a year ago.

Round 2:

Unlike in round 1, it would be all hands on deck for the Lady Bulldogs in round 2 of the tournament.  All seven wrestlers took to the mat and faced-off against somewhat familiar opponents from the regular season such as Marshall and Wright City.  Overall though, the Lady Bulldogs would score only two wins (Bowen at 135 lbs. and Johns at 235 lbs.) and advance to the quarterfinals.  Both wrestlers secured pins The other five wrestlers were knocked to the consolation side of the bracket and would now face elimination each round they go to the mat from here on out.

Round 3:

The third round of wrestling overall was a positive note for the Lady Bulldogs.  Due to the way most of their brackets fell on the consolation side, the wrestlers received at least one bye to give them an opportunity to wrestle on Day 2.  Overall in this round Mexico would go 2-1 in matches wrestled.  The Quarterfinal round for the Bulldogs was a much better showing than the earlier rounds for the two returning state qualifiers who looked poised to return to Mizzou Arena in a couple of weeks.  Both Johns and Bowen would secure pins and advance the semi-finals taking place on Saturday morning.  The lone loss during this round was by Marali Hererra, who ended her rookie campaign losing to Mya Florine from Marceline.

Up Next:

Out of the seven wrestlers the Lady Bulldogs entered the tournament with, six remain in the hunt for one of the 56 state qualifying spots allotted to District 2.  The lone Mexico wrestler eliminated was Marali Hererra at 140 lbs.  The Lady Bulldogs advanced two to the semi-finals and will have the opportunity to win just one more match to secure their ticket to Columbia for the state tournament.  The other four wrestlers who are left will be battling their way through the wrestle-backs/consultation side of the bracketDay two of the District tournament will start with the 3rd-round wrestle-back (consolation round), followed by the semi-finals.

Overall the Mexico Lady Bulldogs are sitting in 16th place (near the middle of the pack) with 20 team points at the end of Day 1.  Should their two semi-finalists secure a spot in the championship match, that could propel them a few spots in the standings.  If they want to climb higher than that though, they would need their four consolation side wrestlers to win at least 2 matches each via pin.
