Girls Class 1 State Wrestling Recap

COLUMBIA — The Kearney girls wrestling team is officially a dynasty.

For three seasons, the girls wrestling side of the Missouri high school wrestling scene has had a Class 1 and 2. Kearney has taken advantage of the split and have now won three state championships in a row.

The Bulldogs took first place with 102 points Thursday at Mizzou Arena in the Class 1 Missouri State High School Girls Wrestling Championships. Brookfield took second with 94 points, Mid-Buchanan was third with 74 and St. Charles West was fourth with 68.

Kearney sophomore Carli Vargas was the team’s only state champion, while Myla Woolridge (fifth, 105), Bailey Martin (second, 115)and Riley Walker (third, 120) were the other Bulldogs to earn a state medal.

“I am really grateful to be a part of this amazing program,” Vargas said. “Everyone has been amazing. I love my team. I am glad I could win it for us.”

Below is the summary of the championship matches for each weight bracket:

100: Festus senior My Hairston ended her career with two state championships. She was in a defensive battle in the title bout against DeSoto freshman Milayna Drummond and she came away with a 3-0 victory to earn her spot atop the podium.

  • 3rd Place – Nico Brooks of Hillsboro
  • 4th Place – Olivia Cunningham of Mid-Buchanan
  • 5th Place – Kimber Drenon of Windsor
  • 6th Place – Aubrey Schrunk of Lathrop

105: Lone Jack sophomore made history as she was the first person in school history to win a state championship. She was in a battle with Herculaneum sophomore Emerson Reeves and had four takedowns in a 12-7 victory in the championship match.

“I knew what I could do on my feet. I knew when I got to my hand fighting, I could get in good position,” Mccleary said. “I stuck to my gameplan and got it done.”

110: Brookfield junior Jayden Keller is one win away from joining elite company. She can become a four-time state champion next season as she won her third on Thursday as she got a lightning fast pin in 16 seconds over DeSoto sophomore Cheyenne Kincade in the title bout.

“It was exciting,” Keller said. “I went and got to my stuff and got a takedown. I worked really hard on top and it just opened up.”

115: Mid-Buchanan senior Delanie Smith ended her career with two state championships. After she edged Marshfield’s Carlynn Mynatt in the semifinals, she dominated her championship match against Martin and got a pin 3:13 to take her bracket.

120: Fulton freshman Mackenzie Brewer got off to a good start to her high school career. She improved to 54-2 and won a state championship in her first season as she pinned Warrenton sophomore Alexis Ruff in the championship bout to take first place.

125: Chilicothe senior Yoo Jung Lee won back-to-back individual state championships to end her high school career. She either got a pin or a tech fall in all her matches. In the championship, she earned a 18-1 tech fall over Fulton senior Emmy Begemann.

130: Odessa junior, like Lee, now has back-to-back championships. Title No. 2 came after she won by fall in 2:38 over Mid-Buchanan sophomore Sophia Smith in the championship match.

  • 3rd Place – Kylie Miller of Knob Noster
  • 4th Place – Arianna Augustyniak of St. Charles West

  • 6th Place – Elizabeth Hager of Lexington

135: Centralia Ava Ward did well on her feet and it translated to success at the state tournament. She had three takedowns in her championship match with Lawson freshman Josie Holman and eventually got a pin in 3:26 as she took first place.

“The thrill of it. I love it,” Ward said of winning a state title. “I honed in on doing my shots and working on my set ups. In big matches, you can get rushed and I made sure I didn’t.”

  • 3rd Place – Lauren Phillips of Oak Grove
  • 4th Place – Virginia Myers of Smithville

  • 6th Place – Isabella `bella` Montez of Carl Junction

140: Not much went wrong for St. Genevieve sophomore Keely Fallert. She has two pins and a tech fall going into her finals match with Brookfield senior Riley Howell. She controlled that match from start to finish and took a 10-0 major decision to finish in first.

“Pretty much anything I tried worked,” Fallert said. “My outside single was probably my best thing out of all of it.”

145: Moberly junior Breanne Gibbs is now one win away from being a four-time champion. She finished her season unbeaten at 54-0 as she won by fall over Principia junior Julian Smith in the finals to take first place.

Medalists:

  • 2nd Place – Julian Smith of Principia
  • 3rd Place – Aliyah Jesse of Lawson
  • 4th Place – Avery Clark of Trenton
  • 5th Place – Zoey Schroeder of Knob Noster

155: Brookfield senior Mya Sackrey didn’t let a matchup against a former state champion intimidate her. She faced off against Clinton senior Amitria Mcnack, who has consistently been one of the top wrestlers in her division since her freshman season. Sackrey gave Mcnack all she could handle and got a pin in the third period to earn a gold medal.

“Anybody can beat anybody. Wrestling is one of those sports,” Sackrey said. “You can throw in a headlock and pin someone. I had a good mentality. It is my senior year. I left it all out there.”

170: In a matchup of defending state champions, Jayci Shelton got the best of her matchup against Pleasant Hill senior Alana Thelin. Shelton got a pin in 3:18 in a marquee bout as she earned her second state championship of her career.

“I thought I wrestled really well,” Shelton said. “My footwork was really good. My hands were heavy and my underhooks were really good.”

190: It didn’t take Vargas long to win her championship match. It took her just 39 seconds to pin California senior Ivy Scorggins as she took first place.

“I wrestled with purpose,” Vargas said. “I wanted to get it over with quick and that’s what I did.”

235: Blair Oaks senior Loghan Sumner’s match with Adrian junior Annabelle Lowe came down to an ultimate tiebreaker. She chose bottom and managed to escape less than 10 seconds into the period. She crouched down ready to wrestle after she escaped. It appeared she wasn’t aware that the escape granted her an automatic win as she won 3-2 and she captured her first state championship.
