This marks the first post-season tournament in which the girls’ division in Missouri has been split into 2 classes between the large schools and the smaller schools. Some see this as dividing/watering down the talent pool since there won’t be a true “state champ” in each weight class for the first time since a girls’ division was created. Others see this as increasing the number of participants and adapting to the growth that Missouri has experienced in the sport. And, an even different perspective, gives the thought that it gives the smaller and often rural schools a chance to compete on a level playing field.
Regardless of the size of the schools or the number of teams in the District Tournament, the task is still the same. In order to qualify for the state you have to be one of the best 56 wrestlers (top 4 in the 14 different weight classes) at the tournament.
