The Team Race: Dynasty or Disruption?
No. 1 Kearney – Chasing Four in a Row
Eight qualifiers. A returning state champion. A freshman phenom ready to etch her name into high school history. Kearney enters Columbia hunting a fourth consecutive team title. Their formula is proven: bonus points early, depth on the backside, and multiple finals appearances. They have the firepower to close the gap before Thursday night even begins.
Ste. Genevieve – Built to Break the Streak
Nine qualifiers. Experience blended with dangerous youth. A returning state champion paired with a freshman built for the spotlight. The parallels are striking. Both programs boast championship anchors. Both have freshmen ready to accelerate their rise. The difference will come down to advancement points and semifinal matchups.
Will a dynasty extend?
Or will Ste. Genevieve flip the script and stop the four-peat?
History will answer that question this week.
History on the Line
Two brackets carry historic weight. At 110, Senior Jayden Keller of Brookfield is looking to close out her undefeated season with a 4th State title. By her side at 145 is Senior Breanne Gibbs of Moberly who also boasts an undefeated season and looks to add her name alongside Keller as some of the most prestigious wrestlers in Missouri Women’s Wrestling history. These ladies look to have their names added to a very prestigious list including: Faith Cole of Lafayette (Wildwood), Haley Ward of Fort Osage, and Maddie Kubicki of Park Hill South.
Weight-by-Weight Storylines
100 – Wolk vs. Drummond II?
Ste. Genevieve freshman Lexi Wolk and Desoto’s Milayna Drummond sit on opposite sides after their District 1 clash. Wolk’s pace and pressure won the first meeting. A finals rematch is possible – but far from guaranteed.
Returning medalists and hungry freshmen fill this bracket. For Ste. Genevieve, this is a must-score weight.
With names like Macie Kempker of Blair Oaks, a returning medalist, and a bracket full of hungry freshman like Owensville’s, Brianna Bodine anything could happen on either side of these brackets to prevent this finals match from coming to life. Returning state qualifiers like senior, Chloe Zeller also look to go out with a bang as they enter their final state tournament. If Ste. Genevieve is looking to come out on top of the team points, this will be a must win bracket for Lexi Wolk to ensure her team stays at pace with Kearney.
