Cheesehead Invitational

By Chris Geinosky

Two of the top Class 3 wrestling teams from the Kansas City area endured a rough start to 2020.

Smithville and Platte County took their lumps at the 22nd annual Cheesehead Invitational this past weekend.

Just how tough was the nationally acclaimed, two-day tournament Friday, Jan. 3, and Saturday, Jan. 4, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin?

Try these numbers on for size. Thirty-three teams. Eight states represented. Five nationally ranked squads on the InterMat.com Fab 50 list. Twenty nationally ranked wrestlers. Eighteen state-ranked teams and 170 state-ranked individuals.

“The depth of this tournament is staggering,” Smithville head coach Taylor Middleton said.
