Just a short drive west down I-70 from Columbia, sits the town of Boonville, the host for the boys Class 2 District 2 wrestling tournament.
The hosting Pirates looked to showcase their talents and win big in a deep district with ranked teams such as Hallsville and Kirksville, and teams knocking on the door, like Moberly, Mexico and Fulton.
The hosts placed a respectable third and boast a seven man state tournament team, with a lone district champion. The lone champion in question is 132 lb sophomore Jayden Davis. Davis took down the sixth ranked senior out of Fulton by the name of Kai Foster in a match that went the distance by a score of eight to seven.
The Pirates scored a total of 120.0 team points and had two district finalists. The other being heavyweight senior Ryder Comegys who pinned his first two opponents to net a berth in the district finals. Both finalists look to bust brackets in Columbia as a pair of unranked underdogs.
While on the topic of dogs, one team who beat out the third placed hosts were the mighty Mexico Bulldogs. The Bulldogs put four guys into the finals and came out on top in three of those matches. Headlining their district champions was 157 lb junior Grant Van Horn.
Van Horn is currently ranked 2nd in his weight class and torched through his bracket, winning with flair as he scored a 15-0 tech fall in the final after a pair of pins got him there. Mexico oddly enough also took home individual titles in both the lightest and heaviest weight classes, with freshman Carlos Juarez-Ramirez and senior Emille Scanavino.
