Boys: Class 2 District 1 Recap

Hosted at Sullivan High School, located about forty minutes north of Rolla, the MSHSAA Boys Class 2, District 1 wrestling tournament got underway Friday night. The 6th ranked Eagles aimed to capture the team title as the 5th ranked Dragons of Ste. Genevieve looked to snatch the title from the host. 

With ten wrestlers making their respective district final match, that is exactly what the Dragons did. While Ste. Genevieve placed eleven wrestlers thanks to a third place finish from Bryant Schwent, the Dragons dominated their competition en route to 264.0 total team points and stormed off with the team title. Out of the ten guys who made the finals, eight would go onto win, headlined by junior heavyweight, Jacob Schweigert, who is currently ranked no. 2 at 285 lbs in Class 2. Drake Meyer also made plenty of noise as he pinned his way to the title at 132 lbs. The Sophomore who holds a record of 44-1 beat out Conner Roach of Sullivan in just a minute and seventeen seconds to claim his crown. Meyer is currently ranked fifth but will at least take the spot of the man he beat, as Roach was ranked just ahead of him in fourth. 

Although the hosts did not win, that does not mean by any stretch of the imagination that they won’t be taking a big team to state as well. Eleven names litter the list of qualifiers that the Eagles will be sending to the state tournament held in Columbia next week. Sullivan sent seven wrestlers to the finals, while three of them took first. Seniors Colton Brendel and Dominic Ransom both shined on their respective stages, while sophomore Camden Henderson punched his ticket…
