Marshall, Mo., (Dec. 5, 2022)- A Missouri Valley College women’s wrestling student-athlete has earned a weekly honor from the Heart of America Athletic Conference for her performance at the Patriot Duals in Williamsburg, Ky.
Senior Ashley Whetzal (Virginia Beach, Va.) was selected as the Heart Women’s Wrestler of the Week after going 7-0 in duals over the weekend. Whetzal won six of those matches by pin, including a second round (3:48) pin of No. 12 Trinity Howard of Montreat (N.C.), with one victory by technical fall. The Vikings finished fourth at the event with a 5-4 team record.
Whetzal is currently ranked No. 7 at 123 pounds, and becomes the second member of the team to earn the weekly Heart award this season. Teammate, No. 1 Senior Kelani Corbett (Wahiawa, Hawaii) at 191 pounds, was named Heart Women’s Wrestler of the Week last month.
The No. 17 women’s wrestling team is in their winter break, and will return to competition with the York (Neb.) Duals and York (Neb.) Open, Jan. 13-14 in York, Neb.
