This is the second consecutive season that both the Men’s and Women’s Wrestling teams of Westminster College traveled up to Augustana College to wrestle in the annual Fred Johnson Duals. Last year the Lady Jays went undefeated and won the event on the women’s side.
Unfortunately due to injuries and other circumstances beyond their control the Lady Jays only were able to bring a handful of wrestlers to compete. Despite the small quantity the individuals that did attend the duals performed well.
On the other side of the coin, the Men’s team brought their full roster to bear for this tournament. Like the women, they would be facing off against several Regional opponents that will be solid indicators on how well the wrestlers and the teams will do at their respective regional tournament which is only several weeks away at this point. They went 1-2 as a team against some stiff competition.
Highlights:
For the Westminster Lady Jays, Anna Stephens came out of the gate on fire. After going 0-2 at the Senior Nationals (Olympic Team Trials Qualifier) last month, she has been a wrestler on a mission. She scored two tech-falls and a pin in her three matches, while improving her overall season record to an impressive 11-2.
For the Westminster Men’s team, Michael Roberts at 157 lbs. (who coming into this weekend was leading the nation in pins) picked up three more wins, two of which were by pin. This brings his season total to 18 pins and an overall record of 19-7. His teammate, freshman Austen Wetzel continued his winnings ways as well and secured three match wins as well, bringing his overall season record up to an impressive 19-3….
