After a solid opening weekend of wrestling last weekend the Westminster Men’s team appeared ready to travel well and compete against some of the solid performers. Last week’s performances included true freshman, Austen Wetzel being named SLIAC Conference Wrestler of the Week, which is a first in school history for this particular honor.
The Millikin Open is a solid early-season opportunity for those at the NCAA Division III level. Predominantly Illinois schools but there are schools from Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri as well. Several of these schools will be in Westminster’s Regional Tournament at the end of the season, so getting seeding criteria over these opponents early should bode well for the Westminster wrestlers who will be competing for a qualification spot in the NCAA tournament in March.
The Westminster team brought ten wrestlers to compete in this open. Brackets were set for the top 6 to place/medal. However, to be in contention for places, you had to win your first 1-2 rounds depending upon the size of your bracket.
The Blue Jays picked up right where they left off from last weekend’s dual with some bonus point victories. During the first round of action, the Blue Jays would score six pins and an overall record of 7-3…
