Truman / Raytown Recap

The Truman wrestling team got a little bit of a test just 11 days before districts begins.

The Patriots took on Suburban White Conference foe Raytown on Tuesday and won all five contested matches 48-12 victory at home.

Truman 138-pounder Caden Deeney started things off by overcoming a 5-2 deficit. He got a reversal before using a waistlock and a tilt to pin Kaseem Bedford in 4:25.

“Just working a lot of moves on bottom,” Caden Deeney said of the main reason for his comeback. “I created space and was able to turn around. My shots weren’t there but my sit outs were really good.”

Carlos Thomas (145) and Anthony Nevels (152) both won via forfeit for Raytown before Truman’s John Chapin (170) got his hand raised because of a forfeit.

Then Truman 182-pounder Charles Herod, who was upgraded from junior varsity, had a back-and-forth match with Shawn Bond-Pushon and the match was tied at 5-apiece until Herod hooked in a half nelson to turn his opponent and get the pin in 2:28 from the top position.

“I have been JV for most of the season and I got my opportunity to be on the varsity team today,” Herod said. “I was able to break him down on top and get a half on him and pin him.”
