2020-2021 Outlook
Keys to success in the 2020-21 season:
Effort and Attitude are the two things individuals can control and are the two things we are focusing on in the preseason. We have been pushing our guys early to make sure they will put forth the effort for them to be successful and getting them to have the right attitude to contribute to our team outcomes as well.
We are focusing on our conditioning and our technique. Last season we seemed to be out of shape most of the year, that is not going to happen this season. We are lifting three days a week before practice and with the weather being nice so far this season we have done some outdoor conditioning on the other days on top of what we do at practice. They think they are dieing but you can see them getting stronger.
Concerns about the lineup or challenges for the team this season:
Our biggest issue is going to be filling out a line up. For the first time in at least six years we will have a 106 and 113 pounder. (Move ins from Joplin Breydon Pelt, soph 106, Connor Pelt, Fr 113) Then we will be open at 120, we will fill 126 or 132, should fill 138. We will be tough from 145-220 and may be open at 285. We have two stock pile of wrestlers, one at 145 and another at 195 once we get those sorted out we should be a pretty good dual team.
Please list any impact freshman or transfers
Breydon Pelt, SO Transfer Joplin, 106
Connor Pelt , FR Transfer Joplin, 113
Cody Neal, FR, 126
Kendal King, FR, 138-152
Danial Brown, FR 285
How will the newcomers/transfers help?
The Pelt boys should be the biggest addition. We haven’t had a 106 or 113 consistently since I joined the staff. These two guys are tough and work hard to get better everyday. It is fun to watch them go at it, I just have to make sure that they stay wrestling and not pushing a little to far.
Cody Neal and Kendal King are kids that have grown up in the Diamond Youth Wrestling club. Kendal has had a lot of success being a multi-time state qualifier at the youth level now he needs to keep growing and develop into a quality high school guy. Neal has been a guy that has taken his lumps in youth, but is has grown physically and mentally over the course of the last six months and will contribute. Danial Brown started wrestling in the seventh grade and sometimes he looks like a giraffe on roller skates, but he is picking it up and will get up some points in the upper third of the line up.
Coach’s quote on overall thoughts about the team:
It will be important to stay healthy this season. We have already been hit with the injury bug a little. Jayce Taylor re injured a shoulder during football and has missed most of the preseason. X-zontae Foster broke a finger during football and will be out for six weeks. These are two guys that will contribute so we want to make sure they are healthy when they get back.

Practices have been competitive so far. Guys are pushing each other and working on their own personal skills. Right now you can see them getting better and I hope it translates into matches.

Coach’s quote on expectations for this year’s team:
Our juniors and seniors should see a pay off this season. Some of them have already been to state, those guys should be placers this year and the others should at least be qualifiers and could make a run once they get there depending on their draw. It should be a successful year as long as we get to wrestle.

Our young guys will learn a lot early and should be a force after Christmas. They have the skill they just need to get some reps under their belt and they should do some good things.

What do you think?
