The list of firsts for the St, Michael’s High School wrestling program continues to grow after the Guardians earn the school’s first District championship on Saturday, February 13th. Under the watchful eye of first year head coach Matt Infranca the Guardians placed Six first place medalists en route to the Class 1 District 5 title.
St.Michael of Archangel high School in Lee’s Summit, Mo was host for a district tournament for the first time in the school’s four year history and the Guardians did not disappoint the home crowd. In addition to the six who finished first, four others came in second and two more took third place. A total of six teams competed at the District 5 meet with St. Michael’s finishing first with 187 points. Lafayette County who will host the Sectional round on Feb. 27th came in second with 156.St. Pius X was next with 90 points, Lexington had 66, Summit Christian right behind at 45 and University Academy with 7.
The day started well for the Guardians as Lucas Berry at 106 & David Maschger at 113 had a bye in each round to take top honors. Lexington’s Josh Payne won the 120 title by winning his only match of the day over Sal Mormino of St. Pius X. The only undefeated wrestler at the meet, St. Michael’s Drew Stanfield, won the 126 title after beating Ethan Hunter from St. Pius X. Stanfield now sits at 35-0 as he enters the Sectional round meet in a couple of weeks.
