“Picking Up Steam”: Tigers Build Momentum

Lee’s Summit wrestling head coach Cameron Pack said his team has been building momentum.

The Tigers especially needed to do so with the Branson Invitational coming up this week, which will feature some teams that will compete in Lee’s Summit’s district in late February.

Coming into Wednesday’s dual against Blue Springs, the Tigers had been wrestling well, Pack said, and it showed.

The Tigers won nine out of 14 matches and took a 47-27 win on the road.

“Early this season, we had a rough go of it,” Pack said. “We are starting to pick up steam and we are hoping to keep it up going into districts. We got a few guys that are definitely solid.

“We had some illnesses today and our (132-pounder) went out there and got a win today. He bumped up from (junior varsity). That’s why we let him lead the breakdown after the dual.”

Senior Robbie Desmond IV (175 pounds) and junior Austin Cornett (165) picked up some big wins to help lead Lee’s Summit to a victory.

Cornett notched three takedowns and he had a reversal and some back points he earned to take a 17-1 win against Marshall Palmer.

“I felt pretty good, I was about to get the pin, but he rolled over,” Cornett said. “I was gassed a little bit at the end, so I need to work on that. I was a little scared to shoot, but I ended up getting them.”

Desmond wasted little time sealing his win as he got a quick takedown and hooked in a cradle to pin Nick Hanan in 33 seconds.

“It was a good match, I just like to wrestle everyone the same,” Desmond said. “I just try to stay low and use my technique.”
