There are several sayings that are associated with our sport that seem to go hand-in-hand with the mentality the sport brings. “Winter work makes summer champions” as well as the converse “summer work makes winter champions.” Another phrase that is commonly used is, “there is no off-season, just school season and then Freestyle/Greco season.”
For at least a handful of Mexico wrestlers, they are living these phrases out. All three of them attended Fargo (Cadet/Junior FS/GR Nationals) in July and after a short time off began preparing for the next event, a pre-season national tournament. There are two premier events that happen in late October, just before the Missouri high school season starts, Super32 in North Carolina and USAW Preseason Nationals in Iowa.
Mexico High School will be sending 3 wrestlers to these events. The two going to Super32 are seniors Jokiah Sewell and Keith Ransom. Both senior boys qualified for this tournament by medaling at the MSHSAA State tournament this past Spring. Both of them also wrestled at the regional qualifier in Kansas City as well to help improve their seeding opportunities. Jokiah wrestled at 170 while Ransom was down at 138 lbs. Both of these seniors could increase their college wrestling opportunities by performing well at this star-studded event.
