The Viking improve to 4-0 on the season in duals.  Leading the way was Rice, who went 4-0 with three wins by pin, and another win by technical fall at 141 pounds.  Seibert at 165 pounds and Vaoifi at 174 pounds also went 4-0 on the day.

“It was a great day today,” said Men’s Wrestling Head Coach Mike Machholz.  “Starting the season 4-0, especially after all the adversity with COVID-19, it’s great to have wrestling.  We have had so many uncertainties this fall that it’s awesome to finally get some matches under our belt.  I think overall, the 16 duals today went off really well, and I was pretty proud of the way all our staff managers really came together to make things happen.  I couldn’t be more pleased about how the day went from an administrative standpoint.

“We wrestled several guys in and out of the lineup today, with several freshman getting their first taste of the lineups.  We have four of our normal starters out with various issues, but I am very pleased with how we looked as a team.  Our shape was good and our focus was excellent.  We went 32-8 today, and four of those were true freshman in their first collegiate wrestling match.

“I think we started off really strong, and were motivated against Bethany.  Several guys wrestled well.  Joe Rice had a great day for us, and started that dual off in a dominating fashion with a fall.

“Against Texas Wesleyan, we were expecting a dog fight, and our first four weights really set the tone.  Devon Schoenberger, Brayden Bradley both bumped up weight classes.  Rice and Hunter Wagner all won in dominating style.  That set the tone and really helped us finish off the dual only losing an overtime match with a freshman at 157 pounds who really battled well in his first college match.

The third dual against Heart member Dickinson State was our toughest dual, but we really came out and took the life out of them early with winning four of the first five weights by fall.  Schoenberger and Rice again stood out in this dual.  Freshman Jovon MItchell in his first college match solidified the dual with a dominate fall at 149 pounds.

“Joe Rice really stood out for us and finished 4-0 on the day.  He was a hammer out there.  He is stepping up after last season, just missing out on the National championships.  He had a super win by fall against a former All-American at Texas Wesleyan, Jordan Martinez, who transferred from Campbellsville.  We are looking for great things from Joe going forward.

Devon Schoenberger stood out for us at 125 pounds as well.  He is very slick and easily out-wrestled his opponents when moving up to 133 pounds.

Returning All-American Elias Vaoifi also went 4-0 with two major decision victories, and another two by fall.  He picked up right where he left off last year.  Our lone senior, Will Seibert has dropped to 165 pounds and also finished with four wins.

As a staff, we couldn’t be happier with today’s effort.  Even in those matches we came up short in, we truly battled well.  Tomorrow we get to see how the rest of the team does while hosting our Varsity Reserve Duals.”
