Mizzou Tigers: NCAA Day I

Mizzou – 17.5 Points

After the first day the Tigers had an up and down first session but a strong second session put them at 3rd in the team scores. Mizzou has nine alive, and put six in the quarters. Bonus points were hard to come by, but Surtin had a fall and O’Toole a major. Still a lot of wrestling to go, but the Tigers will have an opportunity to put themselves well into the team race tomorrow. Note: I used the seeds instead of rankings for this one.

125lbs: (14) Noah Surtin (1-1)

  • 1st Round: (19) Braxton Brown, Maryland Dec. Noah Surtin (8-6)
  • Consolations: Noah Surtin Fall (32) Tanner Jordan, SDSU (4:26)

Next Opponent: (20) Jarrett Trombley, NC State

I didn’t love the Braxton Brown matchup early, and the issues showed. Brown scored three takedowns, and hit a big move on the third one to add two nearfall. Surtin got a reversal in the first and third periods, but wasn’t able to put on a turn. He bounced back on the backside however, with a pin over Tanner Jordan. He gets a tough match in Trombley tomorrow. Trombley took out the 13 seed and had a razor close rideout loss to four seed Matt Ramos.

133lbs: #28 Conor Brown (0-2)

  • 1st Round: (7) Michael Colaiocco, Penn Fall Conor Brown (0:37)
  • Consolations: (23) Brody Teske, Iowa Dec. Conor Brown (11-5)
