Right before Thanksgiving Break it’s been an annual tradition in Marshall, MO to have one of the largest (if not the largest) women’s wrestling opens in the country.  It also has been one of the longest running women’s opens (since 2012) as it dates back to near to the beginning of the Missouri Valley Women’s Program more than 25 years ago (program started in 1999).  During that time the Missouri Valley Open has seen Olympians, Senior/Age Group World Team members, National Champions, and a plethora of All-Americans either win or come up short in this high-class tournament.  The sheer depth of this tournament has grown exponentially over  the past decade and is easily considered a primary indicator of who will be in contention for a collegiate national championship, earn an All-American honor, or even qualify for their respective NAIA or NCAA championships in March.

Numerous conference and/or regional matchups for these young ladies to earn some important seeding criteria for when the post-season rolls around in just about three months or less.  After these teams are going to be off from competition until after the Thanksgiving Holiday.  

By the Numbers:

There were 50 teams from NJCAA, NAIA and NCAA levels, plus nearly three dozen unattached wrestlers.  In all, 553 ladies were bracketed among the 11 weights.  Out of the fifty teams, twenty of the teams are currently ranked at their respective level in the latest national rankings.

The average size of the brackets was 50.  The largest bracket (131 lbs.) had 72 ladies while the smallest was 235 lbs (4).  Over 2 days, there were 1149 total matches contested with the opportunity for the nation’s best women wrestlers to see if they could earn a spot on the podium (top 8).

It should come to no surprise that Iowa led the way in many categories including match wins (83), winning percentage (.8058), pins (23), techfalls (34), and total points scored (670).  Had an official team score been kept, they most likely would have earned a team title.  

The top Missouri schools in those respective categories were as follows:

Techfalls: 10 (Central Methodist)

Total points: 279 (Missouri Valley)

Out of the 84 medal winners/podium finishers, 14 of them were from Iowa, while only 7 wrestlers total from all of the Missouri Teams made the podium.  This just goes to show how much depth there was at this premier event across the board.    

A Little Extra…

There were plenty of former native Missouri high school wrestlers in these brackets as well.  The highest place winner among this group was Jacinda Espinosa of Rockbridge HS (Columbia, MO) who finished in 4th place in the 138 lb. weight class.  Her only losses on the weekend were to the same opponent twice from Texas Wesleyan (Samantha Barragan).  Espinosa lost to her in the quarterfinal match and the medal round rematch.  Espinosa is currently ranked 7th in the NCAA and Barragan is ranked #2 in NAIA.
