Missouri Valley produces three All-Americans

Park City, Kan., (March 6, 2021)- The Missouri Valley College men’s wrestling team competed at the 2021 NAIA Men’s Wrestling National Championship in Park City, Kan., and produced three All-Americans. Leading the team was Sophomore Joshua Isaac (Woodbridge, Va.), who placed fifth at 285 pounds.

No. 7 Sophomore Joshua Isaac (Woodbridge, Va.)-285 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Brandon Antesberger of Doane (Neb.) in a 9-4 decision.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 2 Greg Hagan in a first period (2:43) pin.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Bryon Pierce of Midway (Ky.) in a 3-2 decision.

Consolation Fifth Round: Defeated No. 6 Noel Orozco of Eastern Oregon in a 5-1 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to No. 4 Patrick Depiazza of Cumberland (Tenn.) in a second period (3:34) pin.

Fifth Place Match: Defeated Jesse Pryor of Southeastern (Fla.) in a 7-5 decision.

Isaac finishes fifth at 285 pounds and becomes an All-American for the first time in his career. He finishes the year with an 11-3 record.

No. 3 Junior Elias Vaoifi (Independence, Mo.)-165 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Gavin Smith of Campbellsville (Ky.) in a 6-4 decision.

Second Round: Defeated Gabriel Crawford of Concordia (Neb.) in a 14-2 major decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Elliott Rodgers of Marian (Ind.) in a 9-8 decision.

Semifinal: Lost to Kyle Kirkham of Southeastern (Fla.) in a 6-4 sudden-victory period decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to No. 5 Cole Smith of Cumberland (Tenn.) in an 8-0 major decision.

Fifth Place Match: Lost to No. 4 Sid Ohl of Life (Ga.) in a 10-0 major decision.

Vaoifi finishes sixth at 165 pounds, and becomes a two-time All-American. He ends the year with a 14-4 record.

Junior Hayden Wempen (Riverton, Wyo.)-184 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Daryus Webb of Williams Baptist (Ark.) in an 11-10 decision.

Second Round: Lost to No. 2 Eric Vermillion of Indiana Tech in a 10-4 decision.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Joey Ewalt of Baker (Kan.) in a 7-2 decision.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated Kyle Knudtson of Eastern Oregon in a 7-6 decision.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated No. 12 David Richardson of Campbellsville (Ky.) in a 4-2 decision.

Consolation Fifth Round: Lost to Baker Hadwan of Life (Ga.) in an 8-3 sudden-victory period decision.

Seventh Place Match: Lost to Trajan Hurd of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in a 7-4 decision.

Wempen finishes eighth at 184 pounds and becomes an All-American for the first time at Missouri Valley. He ends the year with an 11-7 record.

As a team, the Vikings finished No. 15 in the standings with 31.5 points. Life (Ga.) won the team National championship with 158 points.
