Part 3: Mexico Lady Bulldogs host to their first ever tri-meet in school history

By:  Jonathan Bowen

It was another set of firsts tonight for the young ladies of Mexico as they played host to their first ever tri-meet in school history.  It was a sea of red on the mats as they hosted the Tipton Cardinals and Southern Boone Eagles, both of whom are in District 4 along with Mexico.  This is the second time the ladies have seen Southern Boone in competition and the first time facing Tipton.

The Lady Bulldogs started off Facing the Tipton Cardinals, and it was a back and forth dual.  Most of the matches that took place were really competitive, including a last-second takedown by one of the Tipton ladies at 107 lbs to secure the victory.  That last-second takedown would prove to be the deciding factor in the team score later on.  Both sides claimed a couple of forfeits each but Tipton held on to the lead to edge out the Bulldogs 27-24.

During the second round of the tri-meet, the Southern Boone Ladies and Tipton would face off each other.  This gave the Lady Bulldogs a chance to regroup, rehydrate, and recharge before facing off against the Southern Boone Eagles in the nightcap.

The dual started off with two double opens at the two lower weights.  Lady Bulldogs started off their team scoring with Katie Bowen bumping up to wrestle at 112 and beat her opponent 3-0.  Abbigale Drew fought hard and was pinned late in the third period which brought the dual score 6-3 in favor of Southern Boone.  The remaining weights were an exchange for forfeits which this time, ended up in Mexico’s favor to help them secure their first dual win in school history and Coach Senor’s first dual win as a varsity head coach.  The final score of this dual was Mexico Lady Bulldogs 21 and Southern Boone Eagles, 12.

Overall, several ladies went undefeated on the evening for Mexico (including forfeits) and have some solid momentum going into the weekend events.  Every Lady Bulldog who did wrestle notched at least one victory.   According to Coach Senor, every girl is improving with each match and should continue to improve over the next month prior to the District tournament.

After talking with Coach Senor briefly earlier in the week, I found out that Mexico earned the bid and will be hosting the Girls’ District 4Tournament.  This will be the first time Mexico has hosted a girls’ tournament in school history.  However, Mexico is no stranger to hosting District tournaments as they have played host to the Boys’ District Tournaments numerous times over the past decade, partially due to how the Mexico staff runs their tournament.  The District Tournament is scheduled to take place on February 5-6, 2021.

The Lady Bulldogs are on the road Friday, January 8th at the Capital City Invite.  Wrestling starts at 4:00 p.m.  Tickets and seating are limited.  There is a live stream available for the tournament on Youtube for this event and you can catch the Lady Bulldogs along with all of the other matches at this tournament by using the following link:

After the contest at Capital City, the Lady Bulldogs will have to turn around and travel to Marshall for that tournament on Saturday, January 9th.  Having to make weight three days in a row, is a first for this team and it will be interesting to see how well they respond.  They will have to do that again next week as well as they compete Thursday-Saturday throughout the state with meets ranging from the St. Louis area to Springfield.
