Mexico Lady Bulldogs Host Marshall and Warrenton

Consistent improvement and effort are what Coach Senor is after having a solid showing for his young team this past weekend in Marshfield.

The Lady Bulldogs look to improve upon their 3-2 dual record as they faced a pair of foes Thursday evening at home.  This meet also kicks off their conference schedule when they face NCMC rival, Marshall.

This is the first meeting between Mexico and Warrenton in a dual as this is Warrenton’s first season to field a girls wrestling team.  According to their track wrestling team profiles, both Marshall and Mexico have near full lineups and it will be interesting to watch the chess match unfold between these two.

In addition, all three teams are now in the same District Tournament this season.  It may be early in the season, but these early matches will have an impact going into the District seeding meeting come February.

Dual 1:  Mexico Vs. Warrenton

194: Shelby Shramek (MEXI) over (WARR) (For.)

235: Matty Tolbert (MEXI) over (WARR) (For.)

With only two scheduled matches during this dual, the score appears to have been very one-sided in Mexico’s favor.  However, in the two contested matches, both of the Warrenton ladies beat their opponents from Mexico.

After talking with the Marshall head women’s coach, the writer found out she’s missing two returning seniors (1 being a state medalist and Fargo qualifier) in their lineup tonight.  This was a definite plus for the Lady Bulldogs and one they would take full advantage of.

After a forfeited match to start the dual, Katherine Bowen got the Lady Bulldogs on the right foot with a first-period pin, giving her four on the year so far.  The next contested match featured Senior, Ivy Perez who secured her fall in the early second period. Abby Drew followed suit and secured a pin against her opponent in the first period.  After another set of forfeits, Marshall got on the team scoreboard with consecutive victories at 149 and 159 lbs.

Coach Senor, took a risk by inserting Choice Foster at 174 to take a forfeit and bumping Shramek and Tolbert up to the next weight classes to prevent Marshall from taking a forfeit at 235.  This gamble paid off and despite both Shramek and Tolbert giving up 15-20 pounds of weight, both were able to secure pins against their opponents in the second period.

Note:  Marshall and Warrenton did dual each other, due to the number of opens, Marshall won it.  The two contested matches (where Warrenton had their girls) Warrenton won both of their match-ups.  At 141, Marshall was open and at 149 the Warrenton’s wrestler pinned her opponent from Marshall.

Overall on the night, the Mexico Lady Bulldogs improve their record to 5-2 overall and start off their NCMC conference season 1-0 as a team.  Eight ladies went 2-0 on the night, which included Kaylin Weldon, Katherine Bowen, Alizabeth Welch, Ivy Perez, Abbigale Drew, Choice Foster, Shelby Shramek, and Matty Tolbert.

The Mexico Lady Bulldogs will be off this weekend and will travel to wrestle at the Blair Oaks Girls Tournament on Wednesday, December 15, and then down to Eldon for their 2-day girls’ tournament.  Both of these hosts are in the Lady Bulldogs District Tournament along with several of the other schools that will be in attendance.  These two events are the last two competitions before Christmas for the Lady Bulldogs.
