Mexico Ladies Kickoff Their Season in Marshfield

Growing the program in terms of numbers was 2nd-year head coach Tony Senor’s primary goal.  The five ladies who finished their inaugural season were all returning and helped quite a bit in recruiting new classmates to join their team this year.  Add to that, a cluster of middle school girls waiting to move up in the next two years, Mexico’s Lady Bulldogs are heading in the right direction coming into the regular season of year two.

Kicking off their regular season in a dual tournament is a first for this young program as this is their first-ever dual tournament In Marshfield.  Getting out early to see the competition that you wouldn’t see until the state tournament was something that Coach Senor wanted to do and the Lady Bulldogs will get that in their first event of the season.  Another first for most of these girls is that they could face an opponent for the first time that’s not from Missouri as two teams are coming up from Arkansas to compete.  Below is a list of the teams that were scheduled to attend besides Mexico.

Branson
El Dorado Springs
Jefferson City
Marshfield
Mountain Home, AR
Rolla
Springdale Har-Ber, AR
Waynesville
West Plains

*Note*:  The writer was informed by the tournament director that El Dorado Springs pulled out of the tournament via email less than 8 hours before the start of weigh-ins.  The tournament director allowed any of the extras/backups from any of the teams to form a mixed team to fill their spot in the tournament.  This allowed for several girls who might not have gotten any matches, to wrestle 4-5 rounds today.

Also, the writer was informed that a few of Mexico’s wrestlers were not in attendance and as a result did create additional gaps that Coach Senor was not originally anticipated going into the tournament.  However, those who were in attendance for the Lady Bulldogs competed well despite the team being at a strategic disadvantage to several teams.  For many of these ladies, it would be the first time stepping on the mat to compete against someone who wasn’t a teammate.  Below are the results of each dual followed by a summary.

Summary:

Mexico Lady Bulldogs finished with a tournament record of 3-2 to start their season and a 5th place finish in the tournament as a team.   This is with six wrestlers who got their first taste of high school varsity wrestling.  All six of these rookie wrestlers notched at least one match win during this tournament.  Two of Mexico’s returning sectional qualifiers, Kaylynn Pehle and Abby Drew both went 4-1 while returning state medalist Katherine Bowen went 5-0 with 3 pins.  Mexico Lady Bulldogs will be hosting a Tri-meet vs. Marshall and Warrenton on Thursday evening on 12/9/2021.  Coach Senor seemed optimistic moving forward after seeing his ladies compete against teams not only from Missouri but against both Arkansas teams that were there as well.
