Mexico Kicks Off Season with Split Duties

It is year five for the high school Lady Bulldogs and the team appears to be growing in numbers as their schedule has a number of Varsity and JV events on the schedule.  The less experienced wrestlers will travel to St. Charles for the Rookie Wonder Woman tournament while the veterans in the room will get their season started at the Wright City Invite.  The Rookie woman is geared towards only the 1st or 2nd year wrestlers (non-state qualifiers), etc. to give those ladies a level playing field to start their season.  The Lady Bulldogs saw a mixture of class 1 and class 2 schools, several of them being potential future District Tournament opponents.

The Wright City tournament featured 17 teams (including Mexico).  Among those teams are 2 NCMC Conference opponents (Hannibal and Moberly), while the other 13 teams range from Mid-Missouri to St. Louis Metro (most of them could end up being District Tournament opponents at the end of the season. (The District assignments have not yet been released by MSHSAA).

Overall, the Lady Bulldogs went 6-8 at the Rookie Wonder Woman Tournament and 7-1 at the Wright City Invite for a combined record of 13-9.  Of those 13 wins, 12 of them came by pin.  Out of the seven wrestlers who competed,  three of them (nearly half) reached the podium (including 1 champion) in their respective brackets.

Individual highlights:

The four ladies who attended the Rookie Wonder Woman all earned their first high school career wins as wrestlers, which means a lot to an athlete just getting started.  The two ladies who were at Wright City are no strangers to winning as both are returning state qualifying wrestlers.  Both Johns and Bowen would pin their first round opponents within the first minute of wrestling, setting the tone for themselves for the rest of the day.  Abigail Bowen’s lone loss of the day came against her opponent from Osage.  After leading most of the way, her opponent was able to counter Bowen’s move and pin her, sending Bowen to the 3rd/4th place match.

The good news for Abigail Bowen and the Lady Bulldogs, she was able to reset herself and finish the day on a positive note pinning her opponent in the 3rd place match and making the podium.  Johns, who loves to pin, did so in each round after the first one, to take the tournament title for the second consecutive year.

The Mexico Lady Bulldogs will not have much time off after this weekend’s opening tournaments.  They will travel on Tuesday, November 26th to the Versailles Girls Tournament.  At that tournament there are currently 27 teams registered to attend this event (including Mexico).  It is a mixture of both class 1 and class 2 schools.  Among those schools will include Southern Boone, who finished 5th at last year’s state tournament and several other potential district tournament opponents for Mexico.  After Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs will have nearly a week off before going to the Hallsville Girls tournament on Monday, December 2nd and then hosting a dual meet on Thursday, December 5th.
