The Capital City Invite for the past four seasons has been held on a Friday night. And for the past four seasons, the Mexico Lady Bulldogs have had this event on their schedule. It’s a tournament that in years past, set the tone for both the individual wrestlers and the team for the rest of the season. With a couple of wrestlers still recovering from a variety of ailments suffered during recent competition, the Mexico Lady Bulldogs brought nine to compete.
With just nine (and only 8 could score team points due to tournament rules), the Lady Bulldogs finished with 55 points and in a respectable tie for sixth place with Class 2 schools Jefferson City and Republic. As a team they finished the evening with 12 pins. With nearly a week off before they have to compete again, Coach Senor is optimistic about getting the lineup back up to full strength prior to their dual vs. Battle.
Highlights:
One of the Lady Bulldogs after having been away due to injuries for over a year and is one of the founding wrestlers of the Lady Bulldogs, Matty Tolbert, made her return to the mats tonight at 235 lbs. Knocking off the rust is a difficult thing to do in the sport of wrestling but that’s exactly what Tolbert did. After losses in her first two matches back Tolbert got some individual wins against Pleasant Hill and Capital City HS with two pins. She would end up with a tournament record of 2-3, finishing in fourth place and a medal around her neck.
Alexus Johns, Mexico’s other heavyweight wrestler in this event, ended up taking first with another five pins, adding to her growing season total and pushing her season record to an impressive 27-2 mark….
