Staley had just one individual win their weight class in Saturday’s Lee’s Summit Holiday Invitational tournament.
That may seem unusual for the Falcons on the surface, considering they have competed for a Missouri state plaque consistently for the past few years.
However, they still found a way to win the team title, finishing with 443 points. Seckman was second with 400.5 points and Blue Springs was third with 379.5.
The tournament took place at two locations. Weight classes 106 through 145 were at Lee’s Summit High School and 152 through 285 were at Lee’s Summit North High School.
“Any time you can get a team win, you’re always happy about it,” Staley assistant coach Josh Lorenson said. “I think you can look at this tournament for a measuring stick for where we are at.”
Staley got its only individual win from Thomas Schrader at 145 pounds. Other Falcons to finish in the top three in their respective brackets included Andy Lipp (120, third), Jacob Windsor (126, second), Austin Marrah (132, second), David Brooks (160, third), Dai’Mont Mucker (182, second) and Jack Stoffel (220, second).
Here is the breakdown of the championship matches in each weight class:
106: In one of the top matchups of the evening, Seckman’s Draegan Orine, ranked No. 4 in his weight class according to the MissouriWrestling.com poll, took on Liberty North’s Michael Domino, ranked No. 5. Orine dominated to take a 5-0 lead before getting a pin 3:46 to capture the weight class.
“It was a good tournament. I have been working really hard in the room,” Orine said. “I am aiming to accomplish my goals.”
