Lady Bulldogs Brave “Chilli” elements, Take Home Some Hardware

At the beginning of the week, the teams planning on attending the Chillicothe wrestling tournament didn’t even know if the tournament was going to take place based on the looming forecast. As the week went on, the amount of doubt about having that tournament was in flux up until the day before when the host team made it official to have the tournament with a delayed start to allow everyone to brave the elements safely.  

The Mexico Lady Bulldogs just coming off their tri dual meet sweep at Battle HS, brought eight total wrestlers to compete. Overall the team had only six pins on the day but that didn’t prevent them from finding other ways to win. Out of the eight wrestlers, six of them brought home hardware. Through these individual performances, the team finished 3rd in the standings with 49 points. At several points during the tournament, the Lady Bulldogs were in 1st or 2nd place, including going into the last round of wrestling. But in the end, the teams that edged Mexico out had more medal winners.   

Highlights:

In another first for the Mexico Lady Bulldogs program, a pair of sisters won their respective brackets. Sophomore Abigail Bowen at 135 lbs., who won this tournament last year, scored two 2nd period pins to secure her second tournament title in as many weeks and more importantly secure criteria over two of her potential District 2 Tournament opponents.  

Her sister, Senior Katherine Bowen at 115 lbs., in a similar fashion, found her way to a tournament championship by pinning her opponents in the first period, including one under 20 seconds. Both of these pins also came against District 2 opponents…
