Class 1 Sectional 4 Tournament Preview

Mid-Buchanan did something that no other team in the Class 1 Sectional 4 Tournament accomplished at districts.

The Dragons, ranked No. 1 as a team according to the MissouriWrestling.com poll, qualified a wrestler in every weight class for sectional and look like the clear favorite to send the most wrestlers through to the Missouri State High School Wrestling Championships on March 10 at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence.

The Class 1 Sectional 4 tournament will be Saturday at Mid-Buchanan High School. This season only the top three wrestlers from each weight class will qualify for state. Last season, it was the top four wrestlers in each weight class that qualified in districts.

Mid-Buchanan will have some tough competition, though. There are two other teams that have double digit competitors in sectionals, including Maysville (12) and No. 4-ranked Brookfield (10).

Macon has nine wrestlers in the field and Tarkio, Trenton, South Harrison and Albany each have eight. So the Dragons will have some competition. Let’s take a look at how each weight class stacks up and my predictions for the Class 1 Sectional 4 tournament.

106: No. 5-ranked Ryder Coons of Mid-Buch looks like he had a favorable path to get a No. 1 seed in his weight class for state. He is a top seed in sectionals and only has four others in his bracket. The freshman had it even easier at districts as he just had to show up to claim first place as he was the only one in his weight class.

Tennison Nixdorf of Penney is the other No. 1 seed. He got a pin and 9-6 decision in the finals of districts to claim the other top spot at sectionals. Gallatin’sLuke Johnson is the only No. 2 seed. Macon’s Tanner Still is third and Kai Wiedeman is a fourth seed.

I like Coons to win this bracket handily given he is the only ranked wrestler in the bracket.
