It has nearly become a tradition for this particular group of schools in recent years. Mexico gets to play host for a number of good reasons. The foremost is that they are nearly perfectly centered geographically between the St. Louis area schools and the northern teams such as Kirksville and Macon. This District Tournament does have one team that should be hunting for not just the District Team Title but also a Team Trophy the following week at the State Tournament.
Regardless of the size of the schools, the number of wrestlers on the team, or the number of teams in the District Tournament, the task is still the same. In order to qualify for the state you have to be one of the best 56 wrestlers (top 4 in the 14 different weight classes) at the tournament.
Below are the teams attending the Class 2, District 2 tournament, a brief summary of their team’s season, potential qualifiers as well as dark horse/bracket buster candidates:
Boonville:
- Overall the team finished 7-8 during the dual season. The Pirates’ upper and middleweights have looked solid all year individually and they should have 4 qualifiers. In addition, they have another five wrestlers who could play the role of a dark horse, which if they all do, would give Boonville nine qualifiers (which hasn’t happened for this team in a while).
