Blue Jays continue to work toward peak performance

By Chris Geinosky

LIBERTY – As good as the Liberty Blue Jays have been this season, they have yet to reach their maximum potential – at least according to their loft standards.

“I don’t think we’ve wrestled our best tournament of the season yet,” senior Drake Smith said. “We’re still getting better every day, and we’re trying to get all of our guys healthy. If we can do that, we will be our best at district and state.”

Here’s a closer look at how each weight class turned out:

106 pounds: Kearney’s Gage Green captured the title with a 4-0 victory by decision against Lane Cross of Belton in the finals. Keegan Emrick of Fort Osage took third by pinning Michael Domino of Liberty North in 5:51.

113 pounds: Easton Hilton (39-5 record) continued his late-season surge with an impressive performance that featured three pins and a technical fall in his five matches. His closest match of the weekend came in the finals where he still had no trouble with Antonio Rizzi of Belton, 13-3. Eh Doh Say of McDonald County pinned Marcus Wilson of Raytown South at the 4:38 mark of the third-place match.
