Multiple wrestlers in the Midwest area got to warm up for a big wrestling tournament coming up in October.
GroWrestling held the Super Early 32 Tournament at Olathe NorthWest High School to give competitors a chance to get mat time before the Super 32 Challenge in late October at Greensboro, N.C., which is one of the biggest youth and high school folkstyle wrestling tournaments in the United States.
The Super Early 32 featured 354 boys wrestlers in weight classes 106 through 285 pounds, who competed in the annual event.
Below is a summary of how the top wrestlers from Missouri fared in each weight class:
106: Timberland’s Max Lundquist earned two pins in the first two rounds and two victories by major decision in the quarterfinals and semifinals before matching up with Oak Grove’s Atreyu Whitten in the finals. Lundquist dominated the match and used an 11-point second period to earn a 17-0 tech fall victory to win his bracket.
113: Kearney’s Maysen Perkins earned three wins by major decision to start his bracket before falling to Nebraska’s Gunner Thompson in the semifinals. He was then moved to the consolation semifinals where he fell to Iowa’s Kline Kiburz 5-4.
120: Nixa’s Garrett Cookman and Kearney’s Jasvin Verduzco both made it to the semifinals and finished 3-2 after falling in the consolation semifinals.
126: Christian Brothers College’s Waylon Burress finished in fourth place after going 6-2 and falling to Iowa’s Chase Watkinson by forfeit in the third-place match.
132: No from Missouri made it to the semifinals or the consolation semifinals.
138: Columbia Hickman’s Hogan Benter lost his first-round matchup before winning five consecutive matches in the consolation bracket, including a 4-3 win over Iowa’s Kayden Eller but he fell in the consolation semifinals Wisconsin’s John Knowles 8-5.
144: North Point’s Brody Kell made it to the semifinals before falling to Illinois’ Aver Jaime 5-3, but he rebounded in the consolation bracket, winning two matches, including a 4-1 victory in overtime against Oklahoma’s Gabriel Aguirre in the third-place bout.
150: Liberty’s Ross Davis rattled off four wins in a row including a 4-1 win over Seckman’s Jacob Vanderiet but he fell to Kansas’ Sawyer Jorgensen 5-0 in the championship match to take second place.
157: St, Michael The Archangel Catholic’s Cole Sackett won four matches including a 6-5 victory over Illinois’ Brady Glynn in the semifinals. In the championship match, he fell to Illinois’ Daniel Blanke 9-3 to take second place.
165: Willard’s Beau Brown took second place as he won three matches, including a 7-4 win in the semifinals Iowa’s Jace Klendworth, but he lost in the championship bout to Illinois’ Gregory Harkey by pin to finish as a runner-up.
175: Liberty North’s Nicholas Sanders narrowly escaped the quarterfinals and semifinals, with wins of 4-3 and 7-5 respectively and he took home the championship with a 12-4 win over Kansas’ Cannon Klukvin in the finals.
190: Maysville’s Carter Harms had two wins by decision and one major decision to make it to championship bout, where he defeated Illinois’ Brody Stein 15-3 to capture the bracket title.
215: Oak Grove’s Bryce Notz took second place in his round-robin bracket, going 4-1, with his only loss coming against Illinois’ Jacob Tyderek in a pinfall loss.
285: Summit Christian Academy’s Noah Govro took second place after finishing 2-1 in his round-robin bracket. His only loss came against champion Sawyer Neemann of Kansas 11-6.
