The Tigers held their third annual Tiger Style Invite, and their first home in the Hearnes. For the most part it seemed well run and flowed at a good pace all day. The Tigers had mixed results overall, with some big disappointments between solid results. They had four champs and 18 placers overall to win the team title. I decided to go through and break down every weight highlighting both Mizzou wrestlers and others to look out for this season.
125lbs:
Placements:
1. #29 Brady Roark (SDSU)Â
2. #31 Mack Mauger (MIZ)Â
3. Conrad Hendrickson (OU)
4. Ashton Jackson (PUR)
5. Daniel Guanajuato (SDSU)
6. Isaiah Quintero (PUR)
I was very off with my predictions here, as I expected #23 Beric Jordan to take the title. He ended up losing his first match and medically forfeiting out. Seeing their starter last season Hendrickson finish 3rd could be a lineup battle to look out for. I was also surprised by Quintero, was was someone I expected to end up ranked this season but he didn’t have the best showing.
Mack Mauger was having an excellent tournament, showing good handfighting and ability to get to legs. He avenged a 7-2 loss to Isaiah Quintero from last season and was well on his way to a title here with a 5-1 lead and riding time. However with less than 20 seconds less Mauger was pushing for a major and in on another shot when Roark hit a perfect Winn-Dixie for six points and the win.
Talking to Coach Smith after and he summed it up well, saying Mack was doing everything you would want him to do before getting caught. A loss is frustrating, but Mauger showed enough today that it made me rethink what his ceiling this season may be.
