OLATHE, Kan. — A little over a month after the season high school folkstyle season ended, the freestyle wrestling season is underway.

The first big freestyle event in the Kansas City metro, the Black and Blue Freestyle Tournament, took place last Saturday at Olathe West High School and it mostly featured Elementary, middle school and high school wrestlers from Kansas Missouri and a handful of wrestlers from other states in the Midwest.

There were 17 different weight classes in the high school girls division, 24 for the cadet boys and 26 for the junior boys. All wrestlers competed in round-robin style brackets.

North Kansas City’s Kamahni Jackson took her first match 13-5 against Olathe’s Kaylan Hitchcock (Kansas 4x State Finalist, 2x State Champ; Fargo All-American; currently ranked #10 in the country) before rolling through her final three matches, winning two by tech fall and one by pin to take first.

“I felt like in all my matches that I was in really good position,” Jackson said. “I was trying to make it my pace and not go to theirs.”

Cadet Boys
92-98 pounds: Paul Donnici of Kansas City won both of his matches by tech fall to finish in first place.

97-103: Kemper Thomas of Kansas City earned two victories by a 10-0 margin to take his bracket.

110-113: Columbia’s Finn Wilson dominated his bracket, getting two pins and a 10-0 win by tech fall earn a T-shirt, which was given to the winner of each bracket.
