Round 1:
Due to favorable seeding and placement of the byes into the brackets, the Centralia Lady Panthers had byes during the first round of wrestling to kickoff the District Tournament. The lone exception, Senior Maddie Shelton (at 140 lbs.) who entered the tournament as the fifth seed needed only 43 seconds to secure a pin against her opponent from Marceline to advance to the round of 16.
Round 2:
The second round of wrestling was a rollercoaster for the Lady Panthers. As a team, they went 5-4 in the nine matches contested. Picking up second round wins and advancing to the quarterfinals were Audrianna Trujillo at 110 lbs, Ava Ward @ 135 lbs. Maddie Shelton @ 140 lbs., Kyleigh Dollens at 155 lbs., and Jayci Shelton at 170 lbs. Of those five victories , four of them came via pin.
Round 3: (Quarterfinals and Wrestle-backs)
The third and final round of the wrestling of the evening featured the quarterfinal matchups on the championship side of the bracket and the second round of wrestle-backs on the consolation side of the bracket. The Lady Panthers had six in the quarterfinals and nearly all of their matchups were evening matched. They were so evening matched that the Panthers would go 3-3 during that round, sending three more of their wrestlers to the consolation side of the bracket, to join the other four from earlier.
Three of the four wrestlers already in the consolation rounds, received byes until Day 2 except for one. The lone Lady Panther who had to wrestle a match to see Day 2 was Bodine at 125 lbs. She was able to rebound after her loss by pinning her opponent from Highland to advance to the next round and Day 2 of the District Tournament.
Up Next:
Out of the ten wrestlers that started the District tournament for the Lady Panthers, three remain alive on the winner’s side of the bracket (Adams at 100 lbs., Ward at 135 lbs. and Shelton at 170 lbs.) These ladies will only need to win one match tomorrow to qualify for the state tournament. The other seven wrestlers will have their back against the wall and will have to fight their way back on the consolation side of the bracket in order to have a shot at being a state qualifier. If everything goes their way, the Lady Panthers could see four or more qualifiers by the end of wrestling on Saturday evening.
As a team, they scored 47 points on Day 1 and ended the evening in 5th place overall behind Brookfield, Wright City, St. Charles, and St. Charles West. They have the numbers on their side and could catch Wright City at some point during Day 2 of the tournament to move up in the team standings.
