Westminster Blue Jays, Hitting Their Stride at the Right Time

The Westminster Blue Jays are starting to check the boxes off for a quality post-season.  One of those checkboxes is dualing well in duals, specifically conference matchups.  The Blue Jays entered the evening with a  6-7 dual record and the opportunity to get back up to .500 on the season.  Whereas, Fontbonne has been wrestling in opens and invitationals, making this dual their first of the season and their Senior Night.

Due to a variety of circumstances Fontbonne’s roster was only able to fill about half of the lineup for this dual and Head Coach of Westminster (Tony Eierman) was able to rest some of his starters as a result who have been wrestling the past two weekends and will be in action again this weekend as well.

Westminster’s wrestlers didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard.  At 125 lbs., Gawronski went right to work securing a takedown and several sets of nearfall points before securing the tech fall victory 15-0. Henry Warfel followed up at 133 lbs., and pinned his opponent, Daniel Bauer to give Westminster an early 11-0 lead.

After a set of double forfeits at 141 lbs, 149 lbs, and 157 lbs.  It was Michael Roberts turn next (fresh off earning his 50th career pin and bumping up to wrestle 165 lbs.), and he did not disappoint and added another pin to his season totals while boosting his team’s lead to 17-0.

Brendon Marquess notched his fifth victory of the season with a pin up at 174 lbs. versus Riko Camacho.  This match was followed by two double forfeits at 184 lbs. and 197 lbs.  The Heavyweight match up, Coach Eierman gave Freshman Thomas Tempest the nod and he notched his first collegiate win with a pin of his own to complete the shutout.  Final score, 29 -0 in favor of Westminster.

The Blue Jays improved to 7-7 in duals and the wrestlers who won tonight earned conference and district seeding of their opponents from Fontbonne.

Up Next:

The Blue Jays will be on the road again this weekend to the Roger Denker Open hosted by UCM (Warrensburg).  This tournament is scheduled to have some of the stiffest competition for Westminster this season with several ranked teams at the Division 2 level as well as NAIA.  They will then have a home dual vs. William Woods (NAIA) on Wednesday January 22nd.  They will then have over a week off from competition before heading to the every tough Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, MO on February 1st.  They will then have a couple of weeks to prepare for the SLIAC Conference Tournament, which takes place on February 15th in Clarksville, Arkansas (hosted by University of the Ozarks).
