After being out of competition for nearly a month, the William Woods Owls were back at it this past weekend at the Dr. Tom Smith Invite, hosted by Conference opponent Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis. The Owls would have several opportunities to gauge themselves against potential conference tournament matchups. There were 10 teams that showed up to wrestle, there were more initially scheduled but due to inclement weather they were unable to attend.
Overall the Owls would have 5 of the wrestlers place in the top 4, with one champion. They scored an impressive 93 team points with nearly everyone in the lineup contributing to the scoring. They would score a team total of 11 pins and tech falls on the day. As a team they finished with a 23-18 match record on the day. You can watch all of the Owls’ matches on the steam links below.
Transferring in at the semester, Ben Stephens looked to help solidify himself at the 197 lb. weight class seemed to be a breath of fresh excitement for the Owls. Even though he went 2-2 on the day for a 3rd place finish, there were some indicators during the matches that he will be improving over the next several weeks as he gets back into the swing of competition. He picked up two pins and nearly had a third pin in his last match before it was waived off by the mat official due to an illegal hold call.
The lone champion for William Woods was Alexander Sederberg at 165 lbs. He was a man on a mission all tournament long. He secured 3 pins (in four matches) on his way to his second individual tournament championship of the season. (He previously won the Service Salute Invite at Benedictine Univ.)

The William Woods Owls men’s team’s next scheduled event is across town at Westminster College on January 22nd. This will be the 4th time these teams have met in a dual setting and it is always an interesting match-up when they do. The William Woods women’s team will be traveling to Missouri Baptist University for their women’s Invite and competing on Saturday January 18th.
