Mexico Lady Bulldogs at Versailles Lady Tiger Invite

A pre-Thanksgiving tournament’s goal is to keep the team focused over the extended holiday break from school.  The Versailles Lady Tiger Invite, being centrally located and on a non-school day, allowed plenty of teams from outside the Mid-Missouri area to compete.  There were teams as far away as the Kansas City area (Belton) and Springfield area (Buffalo and Neosho).  This means that out of the 200+ girls competing, there were plenty of quality matches to be found across the different weight classes.

In addition to the numerous ranked individuals (from both Class 1 and 2), the Versailles Tournament had the #6 and #7 ranked teams from Class 1 (Holden and Blair Oaks) and #2 from Class 1 (Belton).   Undoubtedly the deepest weight class at this event was at heavyweight.  The top four seeded wrestlers in the bracket are currently the top 4 at Class 1 at 235 lbs.  (All returning state medalists) and 3 of them are from the same District (Class 1, District 2).

With several opportunities against District 2 opponents, the Mexico Lady Bulldogs would have opportunities to earn some early season seeding criteria of their opponents.  Overall the Mexico Lady Bulldogs went 4-14 on the day.  Three of their wins came by pin.

Individual Highlights:

The Lady Bulldogs, facing tougher competition than they did this past weekend, struggled against most of their opponents throughout the tournament.  This time out they would only have 1 medalist at this tournament and that was in the toughest weight class.  Alexus Johns stormed into the semi-finals with 2 early round pins to guarantee her a spot on the podium.  She, however, would lose to the #3 ranked girl from Blair Oaks after not being able to find a way to get her offense going.

After 1 period of no scoring, Sumner(Blair Oaks) would go down and earn an escape.  However, despite the multiple attempts by both wrestlers, there was no other scoring until the 3rd period.  Alexus Johns chose down but would be unable to escape Sumner’s clutches until after she gave up a 4-point nearfall to push the score to 5-1 in favor of Blair Oaks.  Johns made several attempts to score but Sumner was able to counter with a takedown in the last waning seconds of the match to put the score out of reach.  Johns would rebound in her medal-round match to earn 3rd place.
