The William Woods Men’s wrestling team signed up for the Loosbrock Duals/Service Salute, hosted by Benedictine College in Atchison, KS as an early test on their physical and mental fortitude. They were set to compete in 4 rounds of dual wrestling and then placed into individual elimination brackets over two days against some of the stronger regional opponents at the NCAA Division 3, NAIA and Juco levels. This included the #11 ranked in NJCAA, Cloud County C.C. (Concordia, KS), whom William Woods could match up against in the individual tournament on Day 2 of this event.
Due to current/recent injuries the Williams Woods men’s team would be forced to give up 18 points due to having three open weight classes in each of their nine duals. In order to have team success, the seven healthy wrestlers in the lineup would have to perform lights out.
On Day 1, the Owls had four rounds of duals and started off Friday morning with their opponent from Barton C.C. After the initial forfeits at the lower two weights, the Owls would get on the scoreboard early and often as they won five of the seven contested matches. Four of their wins were bonus point victories and had a 27-23 lead heading into the heavyweight matchup. Unfortunately for William Woods, their freshman heavyweight (Raino) would lose by pin and give Barton the narrow 29-27 win in round 1.
